For Sale: 23 Professional Acoustic Panels

Everything you need to treat a large room or studio

In 2016 I replaced the cheap foam panels in my studio with the highest quality professional acoustic treatment panels, sometimes called bass traps. All the research shows that thick, high-density insulation material effectively absorbs the full audio frequency spectrum, while cheap foam treatment can only dampen high frequencies. Although dampening high frequencies is important, accurate mixing/mastering and natural sounding instrument recording demands that a room be treated against mid and low frequency bumps and standing waves. The only way to accomplish this is with professional acoustic panels that are as dense as possible and as thick as possible.

Despite the cost, I decided to go for the best panels available, and the improvement was outstanding! I purchased several panels from 4 different companies to find the best products, and then I purchased more of the most effective panels.

All these panels use the industry standard Corning 703 insulation material, and most of the panels use the variety that has a solid membrane or 'facing' on one side which increases mid and low frequency absorption. This facing also allows you to fine tune the high frequency characteristics of the room... when the membrane sides face into the room, more high frequencies are reflected making the room more lively and bright, and when the membrane sides face the wall more high frequencies are absorbed making the room more soft and warm.

For most of the panels I chose the thickest option available, 6 inches. This provides many benefits. Maximum width means maximum low frequency control which is the hardest acoustic problem to solve. 6" wide also means they can stand upright on their own without being mounted to a wall (although they can easily be mounted to a wall or ceiling if desired, and I'll include all the mounting equipment that came with the panels originally). Because they are free standing, you can position them 4-10" away from the wall which provides additional low-frequency absorption compared with placing them directly against the wall. They are also stable enough to stack on top of each other so you can easily make treatment walls that are 6 ft tall without drilling holes in your drywall. And perhaps most importantly, because they are free-standing you can quickly reconfigure them to create a mixing/mastering setup, an instrument recording setup, a vocal both, a home theatre setup, a computer gaming/streaming setup, a podcast/interview recording setup, a sound wall between multiple instruments, etc. They can also be easily transported to other locations when needed.

The remaining panels provide triangular bass traps for four corners. (There was an HVAC duct along one half of my studio's ceiling so two of the corner stacks are 7 feet tall and the others are 8 feet tall. Some of the corner panels have reflection/diffusion panels that will scatter high frequencies back in to the room. These are generally used in the back of the room to add a sense of spaciousness without any slap echo effect. Having a mix of diffused reflection and absorbtion ensures the room does not become too "dead" sounding.

I chose white and neutral gray colors so that they blend in with any decor. Some people choose bold colors, perhaps to create an inspiring or creative atmosphere, but I figured that if I ever wanted that in future I could just cover the panels with fabric of any color or pattern. Having them be white and gray means I won't end up with some bold color that I later regret. The wooden diffusion plate on two of the corner panels is a light natural wood color.

These panels have been amazing. Even when I'm not recording or mixing, if I'm just listening to music or working from home or watching a movie, the acoustic treatment they provide make the room so much more comfortable and relaxing. We don't recognize how fatiguing a typical room is until we can compare it with one that is properly treated.

Recently I sold my home where I had a large studio space. We now live in a much smaller house that isn't big enough to properly use these panels. It pains me to sell them. These professional, top quality acoustic panels will certainly provide you with a lifetime of excellent listening and recording.
